MUTILATED BODY

FOUND BESIDE RAILWAY NEAR MERCER. FEATURES OF MYSTERY. AUCKLAND, This Day. Mystery surrounds the discovery of a semi-nude male body beside the Main Trunk railway, between Amokura and Mercer, early this morning. Clad in a grey tweed suit coat and a pair of black shoesh, the body is horribly mutilated. A pocket watch is the only clue likely to help the police to establish identification. There were no other personal effects on the body, which was sighted beside the line by the driver of the Limited express bound for Auckland. He reported the discovery at Mercer. Linesmen were immediately dispatched to guard the body until the arrival of the police. Later a similar report was made by the crew of a goods train bound for Auckland.
