NEW ZEALAND’S STAND AT GENEVA ON BEHALF OF ETHIOPIA MR JORDAN LIKELY TO BE LEAGUE PRESIDENT By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, May 19. Cables, telegrams, telephone calls and letters, one of the latter from Haile Selassie, are pouring in on Mr W. J. Jordan. (N.Z: High Commissioner) after his return yesterday from Geneva, congratulating New Zealand on its stand for Abyssinia. Dozens of letters have arrived from all parts of the. United Kingdom, chiefly from non-political organisations. A feature is a number from Conservative clergymen, one of whom writes: “I am one of many English Conservatives who are bitterly ashamed by the action of Britain at Geneva. I would like to tell you how grateful I and many others feel at New Zealand’s stand for non-recognition of the conquest of Abyssinia. It is extremely comforting to know that at least one member of the British Commonwealth stands for principle before expedience, and it not afraid to support a feeble nation’s rights.” The Australian Association Press understands that Mr Jordan is likely to be appointed President of the League Council at the meeting in September.
