NEW DEAL SETBACK
IN PENNSYLVANIAN PRIMARY. REVIVAL OF REPUBLICAN HOPES. NEW YORK, May 19. A blow to the New Deal and new hope to Republicans is seen in the outcome of the Pennsylvania primary election, a feature of which was the failure of the candidate sponsored by Mr James A. Farley, Postmaster-Gen-eral, to secure election. The "New York Times" states that the result is regarded as the most important political development since 1930, depreciating the national political importance of Mr John L. Lewis, the Labour leader, and of the Committee for Industrial Organisation. It also casts a shadow over the newlybrightened picture before followers of the New Deal, simultaneously quickening the spirits of Republicans who see indications of a November election victory in the Democratic split. The Democrats, repudiating Mr Farley's leadership, rejected Mr Thomas Kennedy, sponsored by the C. 1.0.. as State Governor.
