A FAMOUS FIGURE
DEATH OF ANTON LANG. MAN WHO PORTRAYED CHRIST AT OBERAMMERGAU. MUNICH, May 19. Anton Lang, who portrayed Christ in the Passion play at Oberammergau on several occasions, died at the age of 63 years. Anton Lang played the part of Jesus Christ in the Passion Play at Oberammergau on three occasions—in 1900, 1910 and 1922. On the last occasion on which the play was produced, Anton Lang was considered too old to bear the strain of such a part, and a new Christus, Alois Lang, took his place. The two were distantly related. At the last performance, Anton Lang read the prologue for each act. Alois Lang is a wood-carver, and is somewhat more rugged than his predecessor. In his conception Christ had more human qualities; he did not stress quite so much, as did Anton, the spiritual side of Christ’s character. Anton Lang had a remarkably fine appearance, his bearded face being stern but with gentleness. With his in.timate knowledge of the greatness of the man he portrayed, he invested it with such a fine fire and spirit that the conception became a vital, living thing.
