BIGAMIST CONFESSES

TWELVE YEARS AFTER SECOND MARRIAGE Twelve years after he had contracted a bigamous marriage with a woman named Doris Mabel Busley, at Spalding, Lincolnshire, Joseph Hayes, aged 37, walked into the police station and admitted his offence. When Hayes later pleaded guilty at Lincoln Assizes, he explained that he had “lived ideally” with the second woman. They had two children, he stated, and he pleaded to be allowed to go back and “work for those he held most dear.” Mr Justice Finlay remarked that in view of the lapse of time since the bigamy was committed and the good character of Hayes, he would pass a nominal sentence of two days’ imprisonment. “Thank you, my lord,” exclaimed Hayes, as he was released.
