A GOOD START

AUSTRALIA AT WICKETS BADCOCK GOING STRONG. PLAY STOPPED BY RAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, May 18. The match between the Australian team and Northamptonshire commenced today. Australia won the toss and batted first, having 126 up 'for the loss of no wickets when play was brought to a stop after lunch through rain. Brown and Badcock opened in a damp atmosphere, with a poor light. Badcock was forcible and confident from the start. Brown was terribly slow, Partridge beating him several times. James missed a catch at the wicket off Herbert. Conditions became miserable with an almost continuous drizzle. ( Badcock went on strongly, cutting and driving. He should have been out at 44, James badly fumbling a stumping chance off Nelson. Badcock straight-drove and hooked Timms for consecutive 4’s and reached 53 runs while Brown was getting 25. The umpire ordered a towel to dry the slippery ball, with which the weak bowling was handicapped. Merritt with slow breaks, was called on at 97 runs. The scores are as follow: — AUSTRALIA. z First Innings. Brown, not out 44 Badcock, not out 72 Extras *. 10 Total for no wickets 126
