WOOL STOCKS
CENSUS TO BE TAKEN IN BRITAIN THE QUESTION OF SUPPLIES IN EMERGENCY. NO ANTICIPATION OF PURCHASE POLICY. (Recd This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 18.. In view of the wool industry being of national service in an emergency, the Government has decided to take a census of all raw wool, tops and machinery in the woollen and worsted industries in Britain, following on the response of leaders of the industry to a Board of Trade enquiry, intimating that they are unable to say whether the existing machinery and stocks of wool tops would be adequate at an average time to meet Government and civil, needs in the event of an emergency. The Census forms are being sent out on May 28. It is stated that there is no reason to believe that the Government is contemplating wool purchases. PRICES IN LONDON RATES WELL MAINTAINED IN LONDON. . (Recd This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 18. At the wool sales, 7613 bales were offered, including 3825 New Zealand and 6806 were sold. The demand was fully sustained for the good selection offered and fates were firmly maintained. New Zealand greasy crossbred Merchiston brought 9£d and IOJd. Scoured Merino combing, Aviemore, brought 16Jd and 23 ad.
