MUNICIPAL LIBRARY

CONTROL BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. NO CO-OPTED MEMBERS. As the result of a surprise snap division at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, the control of the Municipal Library has again become the sole concern of the council. For the past 18 months or more, the library has been controlled by a committee consisting of three members of the council, one of which was chairman, and three co-opted members of the public. This arrangement has been the subject of keen controversy since its inception. The motion for control to remain in the council was moved by Councillor R. Russell and carried by 6 votes to 5. Had Councillor Trevor Beetham been present, however, it is more than likely that the motion would have been defeated on the casting vote of the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan.
