HAWKE’S BAY RELIEF

APPEAL IN WAIRARAPA. ENTHUSIASTIC MEETINGS. At Martinborough and Carterton yesterday enthusiastic meetings were held in furtherance of the Wairarapa effort, by means of a ball to be held in Masterton on May 24, to raise funds to assist the Hawke’s Bay flood sufferers. At Martinborough the Mayoress (Mrs Skill) presided and Mrs Roy Burch was appointed secretary. Mrs Parsons provided afternoon tea at 6d each, and the sum of £1 was netted, which constituted the first four tickets sold. Donations of £5 from Mr John McLeod and £3 5s from the Martinborough W.D.F.U. were gratefully acknowledged. At Carterton Mr Douglas Taverner (Mayor) presided and the joint secretaryship was undertaken by Messrs Steele and Forbes. The Masterton men’s committee met last night in the Lecture Hall of the Town Hall. It was decided that the ball itself should be run in true carnival spirit, and a sub-committee was set up to see that paper hats, masks and paper streamers were available at the ball. An innovation in the shape .of a supper totalisator will be installed. DONATIONS ACKNOWLEDGED. The following additional donations are acknowledged:— J. M. (Martinborough) .... £5 0 0 W.D.F.U. (Martinborough) £3 5 0 Donations, which may be left with Mr Jordan or at the “Times-Age” Office, will be acknowledged in the Press.
