GREYTOWN

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING (“Times-Age” Special) The first meeting of the new council was held in the Council Chambers last night. The town clerk (Mr J. Kiernan) took the declaration from the new Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) and the following councillors then made the usual declaration:—Mrs I. Balfour, Crs. W. A. Tate, I. Blissett, G. F. Edgar, H. Farley, F. W. Wood, H. J. Nightingale, A. Stuart. Mr H. C. Trotman was absent. Cr W. A. Tate was elected deputy Mayor. The following committees were appointed:— Works Committee:—Crs. H. J. Farley, W. A. Tate, F. W. Woods, H. C. Trotman.

Library Committee: —H. J. Nightingale, G. F. Edgar, Mrs Balfour. Gas Committee: —Crs. A. W. Horton, W. A. Tate, A. Stuart, F. W. Wood. Cemetery Committee: —Crs. H. J. Farley, H. J. Nightingale, I. Blissett.

Town Hall: —Crs. A. W. Horton, I. Blissett, G. F. Edgar, A. Stuart. A letter was received from the Government Housing department submitting plans and subdivisions for proposed houses in Greytown, for the council’s approval. - The Borough Solicitor wrote stating that the Commission had offered £l5O cash in settlement of outstanding rates on a property in the Borough. The offer was accepted. As the tenders for the Cemetery Reserve were not in order it was decided that they be re-advertised. PERSONAL ITEMS Mr F. Whimp, the newly appointed first assistant al the Greytown school, arrived in Greytown today. Mr E., Mrs and Miss Graham have returned to Greytown after spending the holidays at Palmerston North. FRUIT INDUSTRY Fruit picking in the Greytown orchards has now been completed. The Greytown Fruit Company has exported 6500 cases to England this season.
