WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

BIRTHDAY MEETING AT KAHUTARA. (“Times-Age” Special.) The second birthday of the Kahutara Women’s Institute was celebrated on Tuesday, May 10, in the Kahutara Hall. The hall was most attractively decorated with autumn flowers and foliage, and an exhibition stall of articles made by members proved interesting to visitors. The members of the Dramatic Circle presented three plays, which were much apreciated. Miss Chisholm excellently played a pianoforte solo, while Misses O. Harvey and M. Welch very effectively performed solo dances. Competitions were won by the following:—Mrs Fenwick, Misses Shaw and Sutherland, and the top tier of the birthday cake was won by Mrs A. C. Sutherland.

The president, Mrs L. McKenna, welcomed the guests on behalf of the hostesses, in a very neat speech. Mrs Jolly, organiser of the Kahutara Institute, Mrs Jamieson, president of the Dyerville Institute, and Mrs Shaw, of Upper Plain, sat at the official table and took part in the cutting of the cake, which had been generously donated by Mesdames Harvey and Fuge and beautifully iced in the Institute colours of green and gold, by Mr Knapp. Later, the presidents of the visiting Institutes returned thanks for a very pleasant afternoon, and the gathering terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
