ROLLICKER RETURNS TO FORM
(By “The Cynic.”)
The autumn meetings found Rollicker showing a welcome return to form, and his win at Avondale was achieved in impressive style. A son of Hunting. Song, Rollicker acts well in bad going, and he is likely to be in demand again at his home meeting at Te Rapa.
Settlement was galloped on in a scramble in front of the stands at Amberley and then did well to finish second. It appeared that he, as well as the winner, were lucky that Shirred Ribbon received a bump and was sent very wide. Even then, after losing ground at such a critical stage Shirred Ribbon was beaten by only a head and a neck, and she finished much faster than the horses that beat her.
Although Lady ' Leigh disports an unsightly knee the Paper Money filly is solid in a race as she proved by her latest three performances which have resulted in a second arid two wins. The Amberley course did not actually favour her, but she won in easy style and while. the ground, is soft she is likely to continue her winning way. Lady Leigh comes from a successful family as her dam Arrow-
let is a full sister to the Auckland Cup winner Minerval, who was by Arrowsmith from Lady Minerva, by Martian from Lady Lilian. Studley Royal, also by Paper Money, is from Red Queen, a grand-daughter of Lady Lilian.
There was some fresh blood in evidence in the Trial Stakes at Ashburton. Rex Maitland is a two-year-old gelding by Vaals from Presumption, by Comedy King from the Martian mare Sunbird, and is owned by Mr W. Hosking, of Auckland, who also had Waitaka, Glenacre, and Mungatoon racing at the fixture. Every Port is a two-year-old filly by Winning Hit from Sailor’s Love, by The Ace from Sailor’s Hope, and will be having her first race for Sir Charles Clifford. Garbo is owned by Mr A. S. Elworthy and is a two-year-old filly by Valkyrian from the Clarenceux mare Denizot, a close relative to Entreaty. Chirp is a two-year-old filly by Full Feather from Lucy Locket, by Boniform from Killena, by Kilbroney, and is trained by E. J. Ellis for Mr T. M. Kelly. ’
Mother-in-law, who had her first two successes at Nelson on Monday, is a three-year-old daughter of Siegfried and Arbitration, and a half-sister to Windward. She showed some promise as a two-year-old but had not been placed previously this season.
It is reported from Melbourne, that D. J. Price has decided ,to retire, and has handed in his trainer’s licence. Price was equally successful with trotters and gallopers. His most successful pacers were Sal Tasker and Ribbonwood. His best gallopers were Machine Gun, Pink ’Un, Subterranean, Berisina, Bribery, Idealist, Balmerino, Tookarby, Ballista, and John Wilkes.
The Beau Pere —Modiste II colt bought at the Sydney sales by Mr W. J. Smith and passed on to Mr R. T. Reid, of Hamilton, created a very favourable impression when under the hammer. According to the critics he is sure to be a racehorse. On pedigree he should be named Model. He was got by Beau Pere (good father) from Modiste 11, by Franklin from Vogue, by Tracery. Hence we have Model, Parentage, Architect or merely Papa.
Golden Orchid went very close to effecting another surprise, in the hack sprint on the opening day at Egmont, and she left the impression that she is likely to .pay her, way next season. Her dam, Monaloff, was a useful mare, and Golden Orchid looks like following , in her footsteps.
Much has been said and frequently repeated that the experts at the ringside when Phar Lap was sold at 160 guineas must have been sound asleep. The fact remains that Phar Lap was
got by a then practically unknown sire in Night Raid. When Phar Lap went into the ring his sire had been represented on the turf by only one horse. This was Nightmarch, who as a two-year-old started nine times for two wins, a second and a third. Nightmarch was undoubtedly a good two-year-old, but trained off and finished his first season with two unplaced performances. He was afterwards purchased by Mr A. Louisson and trained by A. McAulay he developed into one of the best racehorses ever bred south of the line. Before Nightmarch gave a real indication of his merit and gave Night Raid a boost as a sire a southern writer bought the first of his yearlings that ever came under the hammer. At the yearling sales of 1928 five yearlings by Night Raid were sent. The first was Stealth, sold at 115 guineas, and the last Phar Lap, at 160 guineas.
Student Prince won his way out of hacks at Waverley and he was running out hack nominations at Hawera, last week. Student Prince is to be tried as a jumper in the near future. Happy Hit, the dam of Student Prince, displayed keen aptitude at jumping some years ago, but unfortunately a promising career was terminated by unsoundness.
