GOLD MINING
WORLD PRODUCTION Although gold coins in many lands seem to have disappeared the production of gold keeps at a high level, and for the eighth year in succession the world production of gold has reached record figures. The Minister of Mines, the Hon P. C. Webb, stated yesterday that New Zealand, while increasing its production last year, now occupies seventeenth position among world producers with an output of 170,715 ounces, representing a gain of 4515 ounces on the 1936 yield.
The British Commonwealth of Nations slightly leads the rest of the world with over 55 per cent of the total output last year. The world production last year was 35,500,000 fine ounces, an increase of 7.5 per cent, on the previous year. This total is 46 per cent, greater than the production in 1932 and 83 per cent, in advance of the output' in 1928. The five leading countries in gold production last year were: South Africa, 11,735,000 ounces; Russia, 6,000,000 ounces; United States of America, 4,089,000 ounces; Canada, 4,055,000 ounces; Australia, 1,366,000 ounces.
