KEEN FEELING IN SOUTH AFRICA POLLING ON WEDNESDAY ANTICIPATION OF GOVERNMENT VICTORY HERTZOG AND SMUTS ISSUE JOINT MANIFESTS By Telegraph.—Press Association, Copyright. JOHANNESBURG, May 14. Nearly a million people are expected to vote in the keenly-fought South African general election, which takes place next Wednesday. Four members, all of the United Party ( Government) were unopposed, leaving 354 candidates for 146 seats all of which the United Party is contesting. The leader, General Hertzog in a joint manifesto with Genera) Smuts, declared his intention of maintaining friendships with the fellowmembers of the Empire. The principal opposition consists oi the ' Republican Party, the self-styled Purified Nationalists, with 104 candidates led by Dr Malin. This party aims at the establishment of an independent republic and has a certain sentimental sway, but the campaign has rekindled some old racial bitterness.
The other opposition forces are the Dominion Party, of 33 candidates, which appeals exclusively to the British element, the Labour Party, with 36 candidates, and the Independents with 35.
It is expected the Government will lost some seats, but it is assured of a substantial majority. The state of parties at the dissolution of Parliament was: Government 117, Republicans 20, Dominion Party 5, Labour 4, Independents 4.
