TURF NEWS & NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies BIG DOCK A HURDLER
(By
“The Cynic.”)
If Big Dook goes on as satisfactory as he began his schooling work over the hurdles he will assuredly turn out a star performer over the obstacles, gifted as he is with heaps of toe, virility and the ability to carry weight. His trainer, H. S. Greene, should have a good time during the present lepping term, as in addition to Big Dook fie has the fencers Begorrah, Charade, Royal Banquet and John Charles under his tuition. Day Wind showed encouraging form at the recent Avondale meeting, finishing a commendable third the first day to Gay Rose and Francis Drake' and beating all but the placed division the second day. If at all improved by those outings he may be seen to better advantage in the President’s Handicap at Te Rapa this week.
At Riccarton on Thursday, Flashlight (R. Register), Punchestown (F. Smith), Chanteur (E. Leach), Tomcat (A. Stove), and Jolly Beggar (G. Ridgway) started off to jump eight of the steeplechase fences, but Chanteur dislodged his rider at the first fence. Flashlight and Punchestown carried on together from Tomcat with Jolly Beggar, who give them several lengths’ break, bringing up the rear. All jumped well, the two first-named finishing together clear of Jolly Beggar with Tomcat tiring. Flashlight again pleased, and Punchestown showed he had not lost any of his ability over the obstacles. Jolly Beggar gave a fast and clean display, and jumped best when the pace was on. Nightbound (Leach) and Bright Red (G. Linton) jumped four brush fences together, but Nightbound stopped at the next, the sod wall, and refused in later attempts to cross it. He was then put over three more brushes, but his display was far from encouraging. Bright Red was responsible for an excellent showing over his eight' fences.
Paper Slipper put up the best gallop of the morning at Riccarton on Thursday over six furlongs. He was accompanied over five furlongs by Every Port, a filly by Winning Hit — Sailor’s Love, by The Ace.
Wine Card made an exhibition of her four opponents in the Glasnevin Handicap at the Amberley meeting. She is very well and may be on the way to more successes. Golden Chest was the only one to make a serious challenge and her chance was gone at the entrance to the straight. Pelmet is a long way short of her best yet. Acceptable made a poor show and the veteran, Great Star, tailed the field after the first furlong.
As was generally anticipated, Journet did not make good for his engagement in the Century Hurdles, to be decided at Wanganui. The mishap that occurred to the gelding a short time back is giving signs that it is yielding to treatment, and his reappearance on the convincing ground is likely to be made in connection with the Great Northern Hurdles, at Ellerslie, next month. It is quite likely that his owner, Mr W. Henderson, of Waipukurau, will be represented at Wanganui by his recent purchase, who has done well in his work since being taken in hand by W. C. Griffiths.
The Speardance—Lady Beverley mare Dancing Lady has been disposed of by her connections. She was responsible for some great trials on the tracks but was rather unreliable on race day and will now be given an opportunity to prove her worth at the stud.
The Musketoon gelding King Musk was not taken back to Te Aroha after the Avondale meeting, and is at present under R. S. Bagby’s care at Ellerslie. So far this season the form of King Musk has not reached the standard expected. Mazir is benefiting materially from the treatment given him on account of an internal trouble, and will soon
be ready for strong work again. His condition is holding well, and it would not be surprising if he competes at the Waikato meeting next month.
The New Zealand-bred horse Agrion, who was bought by a West Australian sportsman, and who won several races at Perth meetings prior to being relegated to the stud, has a good record as a parent. At the autumn meeting held at Perth last month Agrion had his first classic race winner when Jungle Lady led the field home in the West Australian St Leger. Agrion, who 'is by Limond, will be best remembered in the Dominion for his victory in the New Zealand Derby of 1927.
When Rollicker won the open sprint on the first day of the Avondale meeting he accomplished the task in most decisive style coming through in the straight to gather in the opposition' and beat it pointlessly. Since that outing Rollicker has been doing his work in commendable style at headquarters and it should not be on the score of condition if he fails to reproduce his best in engagements at the Waikato meeting next Saturday and Monday.
A. Julian, who won the Grand. National Hurdles on Tresham in 1903 and Morning in 1913, the Wellington Steeplechase on Haydn in 1907, the Great Northern Steeplechase on Loch Fyne in 1908, and the Great Northern Hurdles on Napper in 1913, is still schooling horses over jumps.
Black Banner has completely recovered from the sprain he received at the Birchwood Hunt meeting at Invercargill in March, and is working pleasingly at Riverton. All going well in the meantime, the Balboa gelding is to make his next appearanee at the Dunedin winter meeting, his mission being the Otago Steeplechase.
\ Lighter, who was pulled up shortly after the start of the Otaua Handicap at Pukekohe last week, was found to have suffered a dislocation of the hip, which was caused when he jumped from the barrier. It is likely to be two months before he has fully recovered, and it is ill-luck for his owner Dr A. McG. Grant, who purchased the Illumination —Rita Lass gelding only last Friday. Lighter was displaying a good deal of promise on the tracks.
Scotsden pulled up very lame after contesting the Otautau .Steeplechase last month, and it is doubtful if he will ever race again. Scotsden was expected to go a long way as a steeplechaser, and although he won at Winton, his form had not been outstanding.

Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the Manawatu Racing Club’s popular winter meeting to be held on May 21, will close tomorrow, May 17, at 9 p.m. with the secretary, Box 52, Palmerston North, or ’phone 6264. RACING DAVS SPARE PERMITS ALLOTTED By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Day. When the executive committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference met in Wellington last week it allotted several space racing permits to clubs desirous of holding extra meetings. The Taranaki Jockey Club was granted permission to hold an extra meeting on July 30. The permit to be utilised at New Plymouth is one which the Wairoa club is unable to use. As Westport is not using its second day permit this was granted to the Marton Jockey Club, which will hold an extra day’s racing on July 2, provided the Wellington Racing Club does not object. As the Waipa racecourse is under repair, the Waipa club has been permitted to hold its June meeting on the Waikato club’s course at Te Rapa.
