NAVAL VISIT
FRENCH SLOOP AT AUCKLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 13. To the accompaniment of a gunfire salute from North Head, the French sloop Rigault de Ganouilly arrived from Noumea at nine o’clock this morning. The customary naval courtesies were exchanged when the sloop was passing the Devohport Naval Base. A crowd of citizens watched the vessel berth at the western wharf. Special interest centred in the sailors’ mascots, a young goat named Jeannette, captured during land exercises in New Caledonia, and a young wallaby named Charlie, taken in Brisbane six* months ago. Formal calls were exchanged between Captain Plante and Rear-Admiral Drummond and also civil and military representatives. Captain Plante called on Lord Galway at Government House at 11.30. On Tuesday Captain Plante, with his second-in-command, Captain de Bon, and the French Consul, M. Andre Pouquet, will dine with their Excellencies. The sloop docks on Monday for an overhaul and sails on May 23 for Lyttelton, Akaroa and Dunedin. A full round of entertainment for officers and men includes a visit to Rotorua.
