WORK OF RECOVERING BODIES CONTINUES NATION-WIDE SYMPATHY WITH BEREAVED EARLY MESSAGE FROM KING AND QUEEN (British Official Wireless.) (Recd This Day, 10.10 a.m.) RUGBY, May 11. The work of recovering bodies from the Markham Colliery continued throughout the night and early this morning. Officials of the company and inspectors descended the pit to make a preliminary examination to discover the cause of the explosion. Nation-wide sympathy is expressed with the bereaved families of the small village of Duckmanton, where most of the miners lived. One of the earliest messages received was from the King, who telegraphed:— The Queen and I were shocked to hear of the terrible explosion and heavy loss of life involved. Please convey our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives and to those who are still in anxiety. We should like also to be informed how the injured are progressing.
