MANY SETBACKS SUFFERED BY LABOUR

Mr Jordan Secures Substantial Majority in Masterton

RESULTS IN WAIRARAPA AND ELSEWHERE

More than usual interest was taken in the local body elections held yesterday throughout New Zealand. In Masterton the retiring Mayor, Mr T. Jordan secured a substantial majority over his two opponents and the ten retiring borough councillors offering themselves for re-election were returned, together with Mr G. W. Morice. In Greytown, the retiring Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, was again successful. Mr T. C. A. Hislop was re-elected Mayor of Wellington and the city contest resulted in the return of nine Citizens’ ticket candidate and six Labour members, Labour having lost one seat. Nine sitting members of the Wellington Hospital Board were returned. Of the thirteen seats, Labour secured seven, the same as on the old board and the Citizens’ ticket six. A new member, Mrs Knox Gilmer (Citizens’ ticket) topped the Hospital Board poll with 23,900. Labour and Citizens’ candidates have, equal strength in the city representation on the Wellington Harbour Board. New members are Sir Charles Norwood and Mr W. Appleton, both Citizens’ candidates. Messrs R. McKeen and C. H. Chapman, Labour, retained their seats. At the last election Labour won all four seats. Two Citizens’ candidates, Messrs G. London and J. W. Andrews are representatives of the combined suburban districts. The Labour Mayor of Petone, Mr A. Scholefield, was defeated by the Citizens’ candidate, Mr G. London, who. comes from a pioneer family of the district. He is only 33 years of age. Citizens’ candidates won six of the nine seats on the Petone Borough Council. The Citizens’ ticket had a victory at Lower Hutt, where the sitting Mayor, Mr J. D. Andrews, defeated his Labour opponent, Mr. P. Dowse. The Citizens’ ticket won six of the nine seats on the borough council. The Dunedin City Council election was a great victory for the Citizens’ Association, who secured 9 of the 12 seats, plus the return of the Association’s mayoral nominee. Proportionately, the representation of the contending parties on the Harbour Board and Hospital Board is almost similar.. The poll was the largest in the history of municipal elections, 31,866 polling of 44,287 eligible. The Auckland mayoralty was retained by the sitting Mayor, Sir Ernest Davies (Citizens), but a Labour Mayor, Mr R. M. MacFarlane, was returned in Christchurch. Those elected on the Auckland City Council comprise thirteen candidate endorsed by the Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association and eight .Labour nominees. Six retiring Labour members were defeated and three new Labour candidates elected. Eight Citizens’ candidates were returned for the first time. The Labour majority on the council has thus disappeared. The retiring chairman of the Harbour Board,, the Hon. T. Bloodworth, was defeated by a considerable margin. City voters elected three Labour candidates to the Hospital Board and two Citizens’ candidates. The total City Council poll. 42,583, was a record. There were 66,200 names on the roll.
