The match between Australia and Leicester was concluded today when the visiting eleven won by an innings and 163 runs. Leicester (5 for 107) resumed its second innings which ended when the score was at 215. Dempster, playing with a rocklike defence, was often in difficulties, and was half an hour before adding to his score of 50. Dowen was scoring steadily when he was given out leg before wicket to O'Reilly. ' Dempster reached his century in 175 minutes. Five minutes later he lifted Ward into Badcock’g, hands. He played a persistent and chanceless, but not really a distinguished innings. He hit fourteen 4’s. The scores are as follow: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings 5 for 590 LEICESTER. COUNTY MATCHES SOME GOOD SCORES. (Recd This Day, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, May 10. In county cricket matches Middlesex, in the first innings compiled 283 (Webster 76; Paine 5/33) and 56 for 1 in the seconds innings against Warwick. The latter compiled 87 (Smith 5/41). Following on Warwick made 251. Middlesex won by nine wickets. Somerset in the first innings made 128 (Watts 5/33) and in the second innings 248. Surrey declared at 9 for 521 (Gregory 243). Surrey won by an innings and 145 runs. Yorkshire, in the first innings against Oxford, compiled 420 (Hutton 141, Leyland 100), and in the second innings had 39 up without loss. Oxford (231) followed on and declared at 3 for 344 (Dixon 108). The match was drawn.
In its first innings Gloucester put together 389 (Hammond 237, Allen 83), and in the second lost 8 wickets for 206 declared (Allen 77). Derby, who in the first innings compiled 314 (Aiderman 150, Dinfield 7/98), and in the second made 142 (Dinfield 5/51). Gloucester won by 139 runs.
Against Lancashire, Hampshire in the first innings compiled 277 (McCorkell 83, Nutter 6/66); second innings 141. Lancashire declared at 6 for 578 (Paynter 291, Oldfield 135). Lancashire won by an innings and 160 runs. Essex scored 450 (Nichols 163, P. Smith 103) and 260 (O’Connor 113) against Kent, 548 (Ames 170, Valentine 151) and 4 for 164. Kent won by six wickets.
Northants put together 154 and 142 against Notts (253 and 2 for 44). Notts won by eight wickets. Worcester made 286 (Martin 99; Jim Parks 5 for 77), and 6 for 198 (Gibbons not out 88) against Sussex 77 and 404 (John Langridge 110, James Langridge 119). Worcester won by four wickets.
MATCH AGAINST CAMBRIDGE. THE 1934 GAME. (Notes by “The Bowler.”) The Australian cricketers commence a match today against Cambridge University. On the 1934 tour, Australia had a decisive win by an innings and 163 runs. The Australians in their first innings made 481 runs for 5 wickets (declared), Ponsford 229 not out, and Brown 105, being the chief contributors. Cambridge totals were: First innings, 158 runs, and second innings 160. In the first innings of Cambridge, Grimmett obtained the remarkable analysis of 9 wickets for 74 runs. I am anxious to secure a copy of Wisden’s Cricket Almanac for the year 1935, containing the particulars of the last Australian tour in England in 1934. If any cricketer has a copy, I shall be pleased if he would communicate with me.
