BOROUGH LIBRARY

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In referring to a letter on library affairs at last night’s amusing meeting Mr Jordan denied promising to limit the travel, etc., spending to 10 per cent of the funds. The report of the August meeting of the Borough Council shows that Mr Jordan definitely promised this; it is there in black and white. Also when hq referred to the “limited” buying of the librarian against the “open” buying by the “outside” committee he said he was not on the Library Committee and had nothing to do with the way the money was spent. As Mayor he has full control of all expenditure, but at the same August meeting he took office on the Library Committee with Messrs Wilson (chairman), Beetham, and the outside three. These facljS speak for themselves and Mr Jordan has quite evidently given all control of library moneys to the three outsiders —a shameful state of affairs. Mr Jordan referred to the other questions contained in the letter in the same manner as he did the first ones and still the public do not know why the other booksellers in town are debarred from the committee's buying list. Thank you. Sir, I am, etc., “ANOTHER VOTER.” When the above letter was referred to Mr Jordan, he said that he had never on any occasion promised to limit the purchasing of travel, etc., books to ten per cent of the funds. Mr Jordan said he was not a member of the Library Committee in August. In that month the committee consisted of three councillors—Messrs Wilson, Ninnes and White. At a subsequent date Mr Jordan was appointed to the committee. It was untrue to say, said Mr Jordan, that the control of library moneys had been given to any outsiders.
