GREAT PARTNERSHIP
BADCOCK AND HASSETT AUSTRALIANS AGAIN DECLARE. DEMPSTER BATTING WELL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, May 9. The match between the Australian eleven and Leicester was continued today. Australia “declared” with the score at 590 for 5 wickets. When stumps were drawn for the day Leicester had 107 up for the loss of 5 wickets. The weather was milder and more pleasant when the Australian cricketers resumed the match against Leicester but later it became misty. Smoke from an adjoining power station, blowing across the ground caused the batsmen some inconvenience. A 300-RUN PARTNERSHIP. Badcock and Hassett, whom the County could neither bowl nor smoke out were responsible for a partnership of 300 in 190 minutes, the highest of the tour. Badcock punished the short bowling while Hassett hit freely all round the wicket. The latter was run out through carelessness in beginning an over-late run for what otherwise was a comfortable single. Hassett hit eighteen 4’s and one 6. He .was sound, versatile and forcible. Badcock went out in the last over before lunch, being splendidly caught low down in the gully by Dempster, Badcock, in 290 minuts gave a solid, chanceless display, with frequent interludes of brilliance. He hit a 6 and twenty-six 4’s. CHIPPERFIELD TOPS CENTURY. Chipperfield and Waite carried on brightly after lunch until Waite was caught in the slips. Five hundred was up after 360 minutes. Chipperfield reached his century in 145 minutes with thirteen 4’s. He gave chances at 28 and 76. Barnett played a rather scratchy innings. Australia “declared” at the tea adjournment. The innings had lasted 415 minutes. McCORMICK AGAIN NO BALLED. McCormick opened the attack in Leicester’s second innings, and was twice no-balled in his second over, raising his total of no-balls for the tour to 51. Prentice and Berry opened confidently, but when the'total was 30, Berry was brilliantly caught at point. Armstrong went out right into the next ball and was struck on an arm. He seemed unable to use his feet and took strike to the following ball well in front of the normal crease. McCormick struck Prentice under his right armpit in the next over, the batsman remaining stockstill at the crease and not attempting a stroke. DEMPSTER ON EDGE. McCormick was taken off after six overs. O’Reilly had Prentice caught in a leg trap. Then he had Dempster on edge, though the New Zealander dealt firmly with anything loose. McCormick returned when the score was at 92 with a fast over, one delivery flying over Dempster’s head. He twice was no-balled. In the eighth over Dempster hooked one to the fence' and reached 50 runs in 85 minutes. LAYING THE NO-BALL BOGEY. The Australian Associated Press says more important than than the prospect of another crushing success is the feeling that McCormick at last is laying the no-ball bogey, showing in the process a glimmer of his Australian form, delivering only five no-balls in nine overs. Today McCormick progressed from conscientiousness to real hostility, taking three valuable wickets. The scores are as follow: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
