POLLING TOMORROW

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS CONTESTS IN WAIRARAPA. HARBOUR BOARD AND OTHER SEATS. Polling will take place tomorrow throughout the Wairarapa for the return of local body representatives. In every borough and county of the district electors will be called upon to vote for two Wairarapa representatives on the Wellington Harbour Board, for which there are four candidates. In many cases polling is necessary for borough and county seats. The hours of polling are from. 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the case of the Harbour Board and borough seats and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the case of county seats. In Masterton the local issues calling for the attention of voters are the choice of a mayor, for which position three candidates are standing, the selection of eleven borough councillors from sixteen aspirants and of two representatives on the Wairarapa Power Board from three candidates.

In Greytown there are two candidates for the mayoralty and in Featherston the only contest as far as the borough council is concerned is for the election of nine councillors, thirteen nominations having been received. Fourteen candidates are offering for nine vacancies on the Martinborough Borough Council and there are two candidates for one borough representative on the Wairarapa Power Board. In the case of the Eketahuna Borough Council nine nominations have been received for six vacancies on the council and there is also a contest for the borough representative on the Tarawa Power Board, two candidates being in the field. In Pahiatua there are two aspirants for mayoral honours and fifteen candidates for nine seats on the borough council.

There is a contest in only one riding, Te Whiti, of the Masterton County Council, two candidates having been nominated. Polls are necessary for two of the four ridings of the Wairarapa South County Council, Belvedere, for which there are four candidates for two vacancies, and Maungaraki, for which there are five candidates for four seats. An election is necessary for the West Riding. of the Mauriceville County Council, there being five candidates for three vacancies. One riding of the Castlepoint County Council, South Riding, requires a poll, three candidates being in the field for two vacancies. In all three ridings of the Eketahuna County Council polls are required and there is also a contest for the three county representatives on the Tararua Power Board. Five of the six ridings of the Akitio County Council are being contested and there is also an election for the county’s representative on the Wairarapa Hospital Board and on the Tararua Power Board.
