PLUNKET SOCIETY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society was held yesterday afternoon at the Plunket Rooms, Memorial Square. Mrs W. J. C. Wells presided, and there were also present Mesdames H. M. B. Trapp (hon secretary), R. C. Campbell, N. R. Armstrong, J. Udy and Jas. Steel. ) The nurses’ report for the past month was read and approved. * Routine business was transacted, and the meeting adjourned. OBITUARY. " J Many Carterton people will recall Mr William Athol Wearne, whose death took place at the residence of his mother, Mrs Amy Wearne, at Levin yesterday. The late Mr Wearne, who was manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Te Awamutu, was a bugler during the Great War on the hospital ship Marama, and his early death will be sincerely regretted. Mrs Wearne, Senr, was a resident of South Carterton about 40 years ago and will be better remembered as a daughter of • the late Mr and Mrs Mathieson, of South Carterton. Mr Desmond Wearne (a brother) is still a resident of Levin, and he attended the Carterton school in his youth. TOTARA LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Totara Lodge No. 3 U.A.O.D. was held last evening at Carterton. Bro. O. Brazendale, A.D. (Matarawa) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. One proposal for membership was accepted, and a maternity Claim for £6 was passed for payment. Five declarations on the sick funds were received and two brothers declared off the funds. Favourable reports concerning brothers on the sick funds were received. Accounts, including sick pay, were passed for payment for £27 Is 2d. W.D.F.U. MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Friday last. The president (Mrs E. Allen) was in the chair. It was decided to hold the branch birthday party in the Presbyterian Schoolroom on May 20. The recent ball held under the auspices of the W.D.F.U. and Y.F.C. was a huge success, and a very satisfactory report was given by the ball committee secretaries.
The number of beautiful blooms entered in this month’s competitions was referred to by the president. The judge (Mr Hawker) made the following awards: —Mrs T. Anderson’s chrysanthemum, 1; Miss M. Thompson’s dahlia, 2; shrubs, Mrs K. Reid’s camelia 1; Miss M. Thompson’s viburnum 2.
The competition for the best kitchen article costing not more than Is was won by Mrs W. Abbott (jug-covers) with Mrs C. Jensen second (paper and letter holder) and Mrs J. Taplin third (tea cosy). Best bran biscuits: Mrs Taplin 1 and 2, Mrs Swan 3. The meeting concluded with a dainty afternoon tea, the hostesses being Mesdames K. Reid, H. Abbott, L. Humphries and H. Quin. OBITUARY. The death occurred at the Masterton Public Hospital yesterday of Mrs Kate Morris, wife of Mr R. Morris, Belvedere Street, Carterton, in her 60th year. Deceased had not enjoyed the best of health for some time and on Sunday night while at tea suffered a stroke. She was ’taken to the Hospital but failed to rally. Besides her husband she leaves one son, Alex.
