CHINESE GAINS
CAPTURE OF CHIANGLINCHENG NEAR APPROACH TO NANKING. LULL REPORTED IN SHANTUNG. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. SHANGHAI, May 6. The Chinese capture of Chianglincheng, seven miles south-west of Nanking, is confirmed. The Chinese Customs staff has embarked on a stay-in strike as -a protest against the Anglo-Japanese Customs agreement. A Hankow message states that Chinese report a lull at Shantung while the contestants are massing troops in the Tancheng area, where Japanese claim minor gains. NOTE TO LEAGUE. THE BOMBING OF CIVILIANS. GENEVA, May 7. China has forwarded a Note to the League listing ■33 acts of Japanese bombing against Chinese civilian populations in the last seven months, in which it is estimated 7000, mostly women and children, were killed.
