THE HOUSEWIFE’S DIARY
HINTS ABOUT THE HOME Milk. Stand a pie-funnel in saucepan in which milk is being boiled and this will prevent boiling over. Table Marks. Marks on a polished table caused through hot water can be removed by rubbing with linseed oil. When dry, polish with furniture cream. Blouse. Clean by rubbing with white cloth dipped in carbonate of magnesia, shaking off the magnesia as it absorbs the dirt. Hearth Tiles. Coloured ones made bright by rubbing with a lemon dipped in salt after they have been washed. Leave for a time after rubbing with the lemon and then wipe with a damp cloth. Finger Nails. “Hanging, nail” often catches in stocking and causes “ladder.” Remedy is to paint nail with coloured varnish to form a “new skin.” Door Step. Go over a discoloured stone doorstep with hot salt water, one part of salt to two of water. When water is absorbed repeat treatment. Step recovers original whiteness.
