FARM LANDS

HIGH VALUES IN DOMINION. ENGLISH VISITOR'S COMMENT. An English visitor to the Dominion last week told an interviewer that what amazed him most about this country was the high price of farm lands in comparison with those at Home. Reports of farm sales in England appear to support his opinion. In a recent issue of the “Farmer and Stockbreeder,” one property is described of 275 acres, "with 1500 yards frontage on the main Gainsborough road,” which was sold at £2950, or less than £ll an acre. At Louth a small freehold farm of 2G acres with house and buildings was sold for £650. An Essex farm of 153 acres, all of which except 33 acres were arable, sold at £4200, or a little more than £27 an acre. A 175-acre dairy farm in Wiltshire realised £6OOO, or a little less than £35 an acre. A Berwick farm of 664 acres of arable and pastoral land was sold at £lO,OOO, or approximately £l5 an acre.. These farms were those of which the sales were recorded in the ordinary way of business, and were not selected for any special purpose. It is interesting to turn to another part of the paper and find that beef is making up to 46s a live cwt and mutton to lid per lb. Dead-weight quotations for beef are from 8d to 9d per lb, heifers 7Jd to 8 3-Bd, and light porkers from 9d to 10.1 d.
