SPLENDID PROGRESS

WAJRARAPA P. ANDA. SOCIETY PROFIT OF £5OO ON YEAR’S WORKING. FINANCIAL POSITION SOUND. (“Times-Age” Special). Complete satisfaction with the results of the activities of the past year was expressed by members at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, held in Carterton this morning. The financial position was considered especially good, a profit of £517 being made on the year's Working. The president, My J. Fisher, who occupied the chair, appealed to members to make a determined effort to raise the membership figure to the 1000 mark. There was a very large attendance of members.

Speaking to the annual report, Mr Fisher said the society could rightly be congratulated on experiencing another successful year, especially from a financial point of view.- The most important step taken during the year was the action of the society in taking over the P. and A. buildings. The financial position had been excellent after the Queen Carnival and he considered that they had done the right thing in relieving the guarantors of the liability.

It had been a wonderfully good Show last year, Mr Fisher continued. The stock section had been especially good and compared more than favourably with previous Shows. The visiting New South Wales farmers had congratulated the society on the compactness of the grounds and the quality of the’ stock.

Referring to membership, Mr Fisher said,, they still had'the 1000 mark to work for. They did not make much ground during the year, but even so the membership had increased by three. He appealed to members to work to obtain the 1000 membership mark this year.

The treasurer, Mr George Brown, said that 'a profit of £5l7"~Ss 3d had been made on the year’s working. The result was most satisfactory, not only from a profit point of view, but as being a clear indication that, with the luck of the weather, the society was working along sound lines and that the show could be run at a profit. Although the annual dance had not been run with the idea of making'money, it had resulted in a profit of £l2. A profit of £25 had been made on the P. and A. building, which in the conditions existing today, was very satisfactory. The building had been erected at a cost of £4,949, and it had cost the society £3,989 to take it over. It had been decided to make an annual appropriation of £l2O towards reducing the building debt. After referring in some detail to aspects of the financial position, Mr Brown said that most of the revenue items were up on last year, and most of those on the expenditure side showed a decrease. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr J. Fisher; vice-presidents, Messrs R. R. Tilson and J. R. McLeod; treasurer, Mr G. Brown; auditor, Mr H. M. B. Trapp; committee, Messrs Alfred E. Booth, H. B. Booth, W. Howard Booth, Thomas Bubb, O. A. Cadwallader, Murdo Campbell, Rawhi T. Sundy, Q. Donald, juh., T. A. Hamilton, George Hardy, J. Johnson, C. A. Knutson, R. G. Kemble, Alex R. Morrison, Colin McLeod, Murdoch McLeod, W. A. Pyke, H. Rayner, W. H. Robieson, G. L. Sievers, O. Skeet, Arthur Tocker, C. C. Wilkinson. Three new members were elected. The secretary, Mr L. H. Smart, said that since last annual meeting 66 new members had been elected. It was necessary tb secure about 70 now members every year for the society to hold its own. A recommendation was made to the incoming committee that consideration be given to Ihe question of including fat cattle classes in the show schedule and providing pens for the accommodation of the cattle. In view of the growing importance of the chilled beef trade, members agreed that every encouragement should be given to fat cattle breeders. The committee was also recommended to discuss the matter of installing a broadcasting system for the next show.

Letters of sympathy with them in their illness and wishing them a speedy recovery are to be forwarded to Messrs A. Tocker and P. Bain.

Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring committee men and to the secretary, Mr L. H. Smart.
