NATIONAL WELFARE
MASTERTON LEAGUE’S TENTH ANNUAL MEETING. ADDRESS BY THE MAYOR. The tenth annual meeting .of the Women’s National Welfare League was held at the Midland Hotel yesterday. Those present were Mesdames H. E. Pither (in the chair), J. Caselberg, T. F. Watson, S. Fletcher, R. C. Drummond, G. G. Tolhurst, S. JMunn, F. Garland, S. Coradine, H. P. Harrison, E. J. Coleman, A. Corskie, S. L. P. Free, A. McCracken, S. Rapson, H. P. Glen, A. Charleson, L. Hunter, A. W. McKenzie, A. Andrew, A. E. Kilgour, Misses Reynolds, Kummer, Boddington, Beiliss and M. Cameron. Apologies for absence were ■ received from Mesdames T. Jordan, H. Brisco, Carruthers, Latimer, G. H. Collie. S. Mill's, A. Miss Guild, Dr Hosking and Mrs Hosking. Visitors to the League were the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, Misses Vallance, Barnitt and Higginson, and Mrs M. Scharnweber.
The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Miss Kummer; vice-presidents, Mesdames T. Jordan, R. C. Drummond and H.' E. Pither; hon. secretary, Mrs A. E. Kilgour, reelected; Mrs H. P. Glen to assist the secretary; hon. treasurer, Miss Mary Boddington (re-elected); hon. auditor, Mr Norman James (re-elected); convenors of committees, blind institute, Mrs H. E. Pither; public hospital, Mesdames Tolhurst, Drummond and Miss Beiliss; social welfare and two. garment work, Mesdames A. W. McKenzie and Carruthers; lighthouses, Mrs L. Hunter; Buchanan Home, Mesdames T. F. Watson and S. J. Munn. Mrs Garland proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Pither and Miss Kummer for compiling the annuli report and to Miss Boddington for her excellent balance sheet. - The motion was carried by acclamation and a posy of flowers presented to Mrs Pither and Miss Boddington. Mrs Pither, on behalf of the vicepresidents," who were chairwomen during the past year thanked all members for loyal support. Miss Kummer the newly-elected president then took the chair. Miss Kummer welcomed the visitors to the League and also a new member. Mrs Pither reported on work done for the Institute for the Blind during April. Visits were paid to those afflicted from Pahiatua to Featherston and comforts etc. given. There were many sad cases but all were so .cheerful and a great example to those in perfect health.
Miss Kummer then called on Mr Jordan to speak to the members. Mr Jordan said he wished to thank the League for its service to the community and he was in a position to know what the League had done. He spoke of a National Women’s and Children’s Convalescent Home which was being opened at Rotorua and the help it would be to those leaving hospitals, though not ready to resume work at home. The Physical Welfare Bill would be a great acquisition to New Zealand, as there was no country in the world like it, and we needed our young people to be physically fit. Mr Jordan thanked the League for inviting him to its tenth anniversary and hoped now they were in their teens they would still be of great benefit to Masterton. He said he might only be in the mayoral chair a few days longer but he would always be glad to assist the League. Mrs Tolhurst proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Jordan, which was carried by acclamation. The vice-presidents entertained the visitors and members at afternoon tea. All the outgoing officers were thanked for their help during the past year and presented with posies and shoulder sprays. The following donors of gifts were thanked: Mesdames Astridge, Buckton and Williams.
