PREPARATIONS TO LAUNCH FRESH ATTACKS

Japanese in Bad Position in Shantung

REPORTS OF SUCCESSFUL AIR BOMBING

By Telegraph—Press Association.—Copyright. (Recd This Day, 12.20 p.m.) SHANGHAI, May 5. The Japanese claim that their aircraft effectively bombed 10,000 Chinese between Tancheng and Sinanchen, but this does not seem to have improved the general situation for the invaders in-the Shantung area, where major operations have undergone a lull owing to the Chinese consolidating their gains before launching fresh attacks. They, however, have slightly progressed north-east of Taierhchwang. A Chinese communique indicates unexpectedly favourable developments in the Kaingsu Province, where they have reached Chinaglincheng, seven miles south-west of Nanking, which has been held by the Japanese since December 12.
