TEACHERS FAREWELLED

PRESENTATIONS FROM STAFF AND PUPILS. GATHERINGS AT WAIRARAPA COLLEGE. The staff of Wairarapa College assembled yesterday afternoon to farewell three members who are leaving to take up other appointments. Afternoon tea was served on the stage of the Assembly Hall and members of the staff and their wives were present. Those farewelled were Mr and Mrs S. A. La Roche, Mr and Mrs O. H. E. Yates and Mr and Mrs E. G. Hasell.

The Principal of the College, Mr G. G. Hancox spoke in appreciative terms of the good service all the departing teachers had rendered and on behalf of the staff expressed good wishes for the future. Messrs G.‘ W. Morice and A. J. Drew endorsed Mr Hancox’s remarks. Mr La Roche was presented with hand-carved book-ends, Mr Yates with a book, and Mr Hasell with a crystal bowl. Very beautiful bouquets were presented to the wives of the departing guests. Messrs La Roche, Yates and Hasell gratefully acknowledged the gifts. Mr La Roche is taking up a position as agricultural instructor under the Canterbury Education Board, Mr Yates has received an appointment as temporary inspector of technical schools, and Mr Hasell is to be mathematics master at the King Edward Technical College, Dunedin. In the evening a pupils’ farewell social and dance was held in the Assembly Hall, there being a large attendance. Mr H. B. Massey acted as M.C. and the Blue River Dance Band provided the music. Games, competitions and dancing were held.

After supper presentations were made by the head prefect, B. Patrick, on behalf of the pupils. Mr La Roche received a travellers’ shaving set, and Mr Hasell a cigarette case, with set of studs and links. Posies were presented to Mesdames La Roche, Yates and Hasell by three girls. Supper was served under - the capable control of Miss A. J. Shelton, assisted by the prefects and a committee of girls of the Home Science class. It is of interest to note that this was the first function of its kind to take place in the College Hall.
