LATE MRS JAMES MCCARDLE

The death of Alice Maud McCardle. wife of Mr James McCardle, of Mangamutu, which occurred recently, removed another of the band of early settlers who were associated in the development of the Forty Mile Bush district.

Born at Opaki in 1870, Mrs McCardle was a daughter of the late William and Emily Dorset, a family wellknown in Wellington where they had been since 1839. She went with her parents to Mauriceville in 1874, living there until she married Mr James McCardle in 1895. Mr and Mrs McCardle took up their home in Mangamutu, wher.e they resided for 43 years.

Devoting herself entirely to the needs of her five children on whom she lavished the fullness of a mother s love, Mrs McCardle lived rather a quiet life, and her death is a great blow to her family, the surviving members of which are Mr McCardle and the five children of the marriage— Mesdames R. P. Anderson (Wellington), G. Purvis (New Plymouth), Misses Olive and Audrey McCardle (Mangamutu). and Mr J. W. McCardle (Ballance). There are also seven grandchildren. She leaves also four brothers, Mr L. Dorset (Masterton), Mr R. Dorset (Wellington), Mr N. Dorset (Auckland) and Dr R. Dorset (Rotorua), and three sisters, Mrs W; J. Jackson and Mrs F. Rockel (Wellington) and Miss Dorset (Masterton). The funeral took place at the Ballance cemetery and was attended by a large number of town and country residents, the cortege containing over 35 cars. The pall-bearers were Mr J. W. McCardle, Ballance; Mr L. Dorset and R. Dorset (brothers); Mr G. Purvis, New Plymouth', and Mr R. P. Anderson, Wellington (sons-in-law), and Mr W. J. Jackson, Wellington (broth-er-in-law).

■ The graveside and church services were conducted by Rev Father Cash-

Among the many wreaths laid at the graveside were tributes from the Pahiatua Racing Club, Pahiatua Farmers’ Association, Pahiatua District High School staff and the Mangahao School.
