A New Plymouth visitor to Masterton is Mrs Birch-Johnston. Mrs J. Byrne, of Pahiatua, has returned home after a holiday spent at Paraparaumu. Mrs A. Vaan, of Wellington, spent the week-end at Kaituna. Mr J. Borthwick and Miss Borthwick, of Wellington, were visitors to Masterton over the week-end. Mrs A. Benbow, of Wellington, was a Masterton visitor for the week-end. Miss Faulknder, of Christchurch, was the guest of Mrs J. Stempa, Kaituna, during the week-end. Mr and Mrs Stewart, of Essex Street, are on a five weeks’ tour of the South Island. Miss Jean Lampitt, of Wanganui, Who has been visiting Masterton, left for Palmerston North today. The following officers have been elected in connection with the Ballance Women’s Institute: —President, Mrs Chas. Holdaway; vice-president, Mrs Jas. Gibson; secretary, Miss Effie Gibson; treasurer, Miss Eades; and Mesdames R. G. McKenzie, F. Horne and A. Hansen. On Saturday night at the Kaituna Hall, Mr Birch and Mrs J. Stempa (aunt), entertained about 100 persons to mark the coming of age of the former’s daughter, Miss Ngaire Birch. Guests were present from Christchurch, New Plymouth, Wellington and various parts fo the Wairarapa. A most enjoyable time was spent. Mrs J. Stempa presented Miss Birch with the customary key. The guest of the evening received a large number of gifts. “It is with deep regret that we record the loss through death of three of our members —Mrs W. H. Jackson, who was our first vice-president and did many years of faithful work, and was beloved by all; Mrs C. F. Vallance, our late co-worker —we miss her generous and kindly actions; Mrs A. E. Dickason, who was always willing and energetic with her help,” states the annual report of the Women’s National Welfare League. “Many of our members have suffered bereavements during the year. Our deepest sympathies are extended to them and their relatives.” FAREWELL BRIDGE PARTY. A farewell bridge party was given in Messrs Hugo and Shearer’s oak room on Friday last to Mrs Sefton Hawker. The hostess was Mrs A. R. Hornblow, of Wellington, assisted by Mrs W. H. Saunders. Mrs Hornblow presented the guest of honour with a sweets bouquet, and Mrs Saunders, on behalf of those present handed her a brass bowl. Mrs Hawker feelingly responded. Mrs Hawker left today for Auckland where Mr Hawker will join the branch of the Bank of New South Wales on promotion.
