HOCKEY

WAIRARAPA SEASON OPENED. GOOD FORM SHOWN. The Wairarapa Hockey Association's championship fixtures were commenced on Saturday. Conditions were ideal for play, and the form shown was very good. Some interesting games were witnessed. On the Carterton grounds, last year’s championship winners ran up a big total against Dalefield, 14/3. Carterton have almost the same team as last year, and were responsible for some pretty play. Dalefield, however, has had to promote several juniors to their team, and will no doubt improve in their play. Kiwi and Wesley met at Lansdowne in a very keenly contested game, the honours going to Kiwi by 4/1. , The junior teams showed good form on Saturday, and, with the exception of College A v. Greytown, the games provided very close finishes. Wesley A and B teams secured wins against Dalefield and College B, respectively, while College A scored a 14/0 win over Greytown. Results are as follow:— SENIOR. Carterton beat Dalefield, 14/3. Kiwi beat Wesley, 4/1. JUNIOR. Wesley A beat Dalefield, 4/3. Wesley B beat College B, 3/2. College A beat Greytown, 14/0. LADIES’ GAMES. HIGH SCORES RECORDED. The Women’s Association’s games were also commenced on Saturday, and high scores were the order of the day. In the senior division, Kia Ora defeated College by 7/2. Kia Ora made far more use of their chances and this gave them the advantage. ■ Kiwi signalled their entry into the competition by running up 8 goals to nil against Te Ore Ore. Kiwi the makings of a very good team, and should be a hard team to beat in the competition. The Carterton ladies have again entered the competition, but met a snag in Excelsior, who ran up the big score of 19/0. The combination and goal-shooting of the Excelsior forwards in particular were excellent, and Misses E. Madsen and N. Page had a day out, scoring nine and six goals respectively. Carterton have been out of the game for several seasons, and when fully established will improve a lot, as several of their players, some of whom showed good promise, were playing their first game. Results were as folows: — SENIOR. Excelsior beat Carterton, 19/0. Kia Ora beat College, 7/2. Kiwi beat Te Ore Ore, 8/0. JUNIOR. College A beat College B, 3/0. Excelsior beat Kia Ora, 3/1.
