NOCTURNAL VISITOR

SURPRISE FOR MASTERTON BUSINESS MAN. When Mr J. Kerslake opened up his auction mart this morning he found that an unusual visitor had arrived during the night. Crouched on the side of the 'passageway against a box was a petrel of black plumage, black legs and feet and a light-coloured bill. Evidently it had become lost during the night on account of the stormy conditions prevailing on the west coast and had found its way over the grid into Mr Kerslake’s passageway. From a casual examination of the bird it appears to be a black petrel, a rather rare species, which is seldom reported these days. In the earlier days it was stated to breed high up on the Rimutaka Ranges but it is not known if it still continues to do so. Arrangements have been made to liberate the bird, as it is impossible to keep it alive in captivity, and moreover, it is a protected species.
