Mr J. M. O’Reilly, Collector of Customs at New Plymouth, is on a visit to Masterton. Major Neeve, of the Salvation Army, Wellington, is on a visit to Masterton for a few days. The Hon 11. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, left Wellington for Auckland by the Limited express last night. He will return to Wellington on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs R. T. St Lawrence and family, who have been visiting relatives in Masterton, today returned to their home at Haumoana, Hawke’s Bay.

At last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, votes of condolence were passed with Mr H. Brisco in the loss of his daughter, and Mrs W. L. Wrigley in the loss of her husband. Cabled news has been received in Wellington of the death in London of Mr Frederick Haybittie, who some years ago was one of Wellington’s best known citizens. Mr Haybittie was the eldest son of the late Mr Richard Haybittle, a pioneer resident of Wellington. Dr W. J. Wiley, of the Australian Council of Scientific Research, who has been attached to the staff of the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute for some time under a reciprocal arrangement, loft lor Australia this week to attend two important conferences. He is to return to New Zaland in June. Arrangements for the administration of the portfolios held by the Hon W. Lee Martin during his absence in Australia were announced last evening by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon M. J. Savage. The portfolio of Agriculture will be administered by the Minister of Lands, Hon F. Langstone, and the At-torney-General, Hon. H. G. R. Mason, will assume Ministerial control of the National Provident Fund and Friendly Societies Department. Mr Martin will leave Wellington for the north by the Limited express tomorrow night and sail from Auckland for Sydney by the Aorangi on Monday, to attend a meeting of the Australian Agricultural Council, commencing at Canberra on May 10. Before returning to New Zealand the Minister intends to visit some of the agricultural districts in New South Wales. He expects to arrive back at Wellington by the Awatea on May 26.
