STATE HOUSES

CONSTRUCTION IN MASTERTON. SHORTAGE OF TILES DELAYS WORK. Twelve of the State houses being erected in the Tararua Street area, Masterton, are ready for roofing and others are just being started. Altogether there will be 22 house units to be constructed under the present contract, two double units, and eighteen single house units. Some delay has occurred in the delivery of tiles. These are being manufactured in New Zealand, but on account of the unprecedented demand brought about by the extensive use of tiles on many hundreds of State houses being built in New Zealand the factories have been unable to cope with the demand. In order to relieve the position a certain number of tiles is being imported from Australia and it is expected that the shortage will be overcome within the next few weeks. It is stated that there is a considerable amount of misapprehension concerning the construction of State houses locally. Besides the houses already being erected in the Tararua Street area the Government has a further 76 sections available for additional houses. It is necessary, however, that those desiring houses should make application, as further houses, it is stated, will be erected to meet the demand.
