Quail for Tonga.
A somewhat unusual request was dealt with by the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society when a letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs inquiring into the possibility of obtaining two dozen quail for liberation in Tonga. The letter explained that Prince Tugi, Premier of Tonga, was anxious to acclimatise quail on the island, and efforts to obtain them in the north had failed. The society was asked if it could fill the order. As the department offered to issue the necessary warrant for the trapping of the birds, it was agreed to supply them at once. The Shooting Season. “There is a sound reason why Saturday, April 30. could not be fixed for the opening of the shooting season,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon W. E. Parry, when shown yesterday a statement made by the Wanganui Acclimatisation Society that the decision to open the season on Monday, May 2, “offers a temptation to a certain class to indulge in illicit shooting during the weekend, thus placing the bona fide sportsman at a decided disadvantage.” The Minister said the Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921-22, specifically provides that the season shall not open earlier than May 1.
