MARTINBOROUGH
ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a moderate attendance of parishioners at the annual general meeting of the Anglican Church last evening. The Rev. F. O. Ball presided. The balance sheet showed a satisfactory financial position. Mr Ball, in presenting his second annual report, noted with regret the loss during the year , through removal of willing and faithful parish workers in the persons of Mr and Mrs lan Grace, Mrs Webb and Mrs Sleeth, and Mr Jim Brentnall. Also death had taken from the Parish two devoted workers in Constable Sleeth and Mrs Barker. The Vicar expressed his grateful thanks to the Ladies’ Guild for their help during the past year.' A letter was received from Mr A. Robinson stating with regret that owing to ill health he would not be able to resume the duties of Vicar’s warden during the coming year. It was decided that Mr Robinson’s excellent work as Vicar’s warden and synodsman be on record. Mr Ball has chosen Mr R. A. Mitchell to be his warden.
The Vicar thanked the organists, Mrs McAnulty and Miss Kitty Smith and also the Sunday School teachers for their assistance. Much appreciation of Mr Owen Grant’s work as secretary was expressed. > The election of the vestry resulted as follows:—People’s warden, Mr W. B. Martin; vestry, Messrs A. Brimble, D. R. Matheson, W. O. Hewetson, O. Grant, J. G. Mahood, B. G. Wallis, E. Clarke; synodsman, Mr W. B. Martin; auditor, Mr A. O. Pike. A motion of regret at the serious (illness of Mr C. F. McAllum was passed. Mr and Mrs McAllum have been devoted church workers for many years and their inability to take part In Parish activities through ill health is deeply regretted by all parishioners. At the close of the meeting supper Was served by the ladies present. R.S.A. BRANCH. The annual meeting of the local branch of the R.S.A., held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall last evening was well attended. The chairman (Mr N. H. Thomas) presented his report as follows:-— “Your committee has pleasure in presenting the sixth annual report of this branch. The work during the year has been light. A successful evening was held in September last when a large party from Masterton visited us, Captain J. C. Holmes giving an interesting talk on Indian frontier woi/t. Two members of the branch are visiting Sydney with the Anzac contingent. Relief money distributed during last year amounted to £6 15s, three men sharing the distribution. We are indebted to Mrs W. B. Martin for organising the sale of poppies, total sales jof which amount to £lB 18s. The total membership for the year was 28. A short ceremony in the Square on Anzac Day was conducted by the Rev F. O. Ball. A collection made for the War Graves Fund for the local cemetery amounted to £5 11s 6d.” The officers elected resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr N. H. Thomas; vice-chairman, Mr F. Craig; hon. secretary, Mr N. C. D. Mason; executive committee, Messrs T. H. Smith, W. J. Knell, A. C. Caseley, J. Jenkins; delegate to the Central committee, Mr N. H. Thomas. > ' After the meeting Mr T. H. Smith addressed the gathering on the Mesopotamian Campaign and Mr J. H. Irving (Wairarapa chairman) spoke on incidents in his Australian tour in 1937. Supper was served and much appreciated. GIFT AFTERNOON. An enjoyable afternoon was spent on Wednesday when Mrs T. Boyd and Miss Claire Ronalds entertained a number of friends of Miss Eileen Hamilton whose marriage will take place tomorrow. Miss Topsy Taylor played a pianoforte solo and Mrs Boyd sang, both items proving very popular. The competitions held were won by Misses Connie Hamilton, Molly Ward and Mrs Nicol. The lucky seat was won by Mrs Hall, and Miss Eileen Hamilton was the holder of the lucky cup. When Miss Hamilton opened her parcels she found a valuable collection of chinaware for her home. The afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. PADDY’S MARKET. The very energetic members and supporters of the Plunket Society conducted a highly successful paddy’s market in the old Town Hall yesterday. Most of the stalls were sold completely out and the sum received was very satisfactory. SCHOOL ASSOCIATION DANCE. The usual popular euchre and dance conducted by the Home and School Association was held in the school last evening. There was a good attendance despite the heavy rain. Music for the dancing was rupplied by Mr F. P. Duffy with extra numbers by Miss Prussing. The Mc~ite Carlo fox trot was won by Mr R.w Harley and partner. The winners of the euchre tournament were: —Ladies: Mrs Skill, 1; Mrs
Davidson, 2. Men: Mr Lawrence, 1: Mr Little, 2. PERSONAL ITEMS. Sister D’Emden, who has been visiting Miss Joy McAllum for a few days, returned to Featherston today where she is nursing in the Kelvin Private Hospital. Mr G. McLennan, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, left for Auckland last evening from where he will sail for Sydney on a five weeks’ vacation. His position is being filled temporarily by Mr J. S. Shaw, of Wellington. Mr Bernard Flynn, of the Transport Department, Wellington, is home on a fortnight’s annual leave.
