When 'decarbonising the engine of a motor car it is important that the bolt holes in the cylinder block should be free of carbon when the cylinder head js replaced. Otherwise the bolts will bottom on the carbon and the threads may be stripped when the bolts are being screwed up. Even if the threads are not injured it will be impossible to screw the head down tightly if the bolts bottom on an accumulation of carbon -in the holes.
