“Theer is no doubt at all that the name should be spelt with an ‘h,’ ” said Mr L. J. B. Chapple at a meeting of the Whanganui Historical Society. "How we can bring it about remains to be seen. It has been suggested that a monster petition should be inaugurated, while others consider that if the ’h' were added in general use and adopted by the press, the change could be brought about." An act of Parliament had been necessary to change the name from Petre to Wanganui and to replace the missing "h” further legislation would be required.
