MEAT GRADING

FARM PROGRESS OVERSEAS MR. COCKAYNE TO INVESTIGATE VISIT TO BE PAID TO ENGLAND (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, April 28. Agricultural developments in the United Kingdom and in other overseas countries and the operation of the regulations governing the grading of New Zealand meat for export are to be investigated by the Director-General of Agriculture, Mr A. H. Cockayne, 1.5.0. He will leave Sydney for London by the Cathay on May 25 after attending the meeting of the Australian Agricultural Council with the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon W. Lee Martin, at Canberra early next month. Mr Cockayne, who will also visit Canada and Europe, expects to be absent from New Zealand for about six and a half months. During his absence the Assistant Director-General of Agriculture, Mr E. J. Fawcett, will be Acting Director-General of Agriculture. “Arrangements have been made for Mr Cockayne to proceed direct to Great Britain after attending the meeting of the Australian Agricultural Council,” said Mr Lee Martin, in an interview this evening. “Mr Cockayne will confer with the meat trade in the United Kingdom, particularly in regard to the grading of New Zealand baconers, with a view to ascertaining how the present grading regulations are operating in practice and if it is necessary to amend them to bring the regulations, into line with consumer requirements. He will also investigate the operation of other regulations administered by the Department of Agriculture governing the grading of produce. “The opportunity will be taken by Mr Cockayne to ascertain the latest investigations that are being made in Great Britain into animal diseases, and he will advise the Government as to what steps should be taken in the Dominion to deal with this question. Mr Cockayne will visit agricultural stations in Great Britain, the Continent of Europe, and in Canada. Avenues of agricultural research will also be investigated, particularly the latest developments in agricultural extension work generally. While in Canada Mr Cockayne will attend the International Conference of Agricultural Economists.
