PIRATICAL ATTACK
JAPANESE SEIZE BRITISH STEAMER MEMBERS OF CHINESE CREW BAYONETED. BRITISH GUNBOAT GOING TO SCENE. SHANGHAI, April 27. Japanese from launches boarded the British steamer Tungwo, owned by Jardines, at the mouth of Yangtse. They bayoneted and wounded the Chinese members of the crew and then escorted the vessel to the Japanese base at Tsungming Island, where they searched it from top to bottoms The owners declare the ship was carrying ordinary cargo. The Japanese allege arms were being carried. A British gunboat is preparing to go to the scene. VESSEL RELEASED. AFTER RECOVERY BY FORCE HAD BEEN ORDERED. (Recd This Day, 10.5 a.m.) SHANGHAI, April 27. The British steamer Tungwo has been released. The gunboat Cricket, with decks cleared for action, had been instructed to recover the Tungwo by force when the Japanese capitulation was announced.
