FIGURES OF EMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN. ESTABLISHMENT OF RECORD TOTAL. RUGBY, April 25. Britain’s employment figures rose on an average by more than 500,000 in 1937 and unemployment figures decreased by more than 250,000, according to the annual r.eport of the Ministry of Labour. The employed population reached the record total of 13,t 400,000. Special areas accounted for 99,000 out of the total employment increase of 689,000, between June, 1936, and June, 1937. Government expenditure in the special areas reached a high figure and on December 31 the commitments of the commissions totalled £13,644,000 :‘n England and Wales, and more than £1,500,000 in Scotland. Much of this has already been spent. The former exodus from the special areas to London has been arrested and in some cases it has been virtually reversed.
