The United Party is contesting all of the 150 seats in Parliament. The nominations include 103 Nationalists, 33 Dominion Party, 37 Labour, 31 Independents, 3 Grey Shirts, and 3 Socialists. The general election takes place on May 18. Dr Malan, Leader of the Nationalists, avows that the only solution of the racial struggle will be a republic. He declared: “When England places South Africa’s fate in her own hands we are prepared to be England’s friend.” Mr Stallard, Leader of the Dominion Party, advocates Empire unity, with the several Dominions to be free partners in it. General Hertzog characterised the demand for a republic at present as an absurdity.

General Smuts urges the people to vote for prosperity.
