A balloon which broke away from its moorings at Cardington in Bedfordshire, reached a height of 10,000 feet before it crashed in Gloucestershire. In 1870 Queen Victoria gave the Slough Fire Brigade its brass helmets, and the firemen have just replaced them with leather ones.
