STOCK MARKET
PONGAROA SALE. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report on their Pongaroa sale held on Saturday last as follows: —A good en'try of sheep and cattle came forward, and in spite of the adverse weather conditions there was a large and representative attendance of buyers, several being present from Manawatu and Dannevirke. Bidding throughout was spirited, the enquiry for both sheep and cattle being strong, with the result a very good sale. The sheep entry comprised chiefly of store 2-th wethers and these met an improved market; a line of 1185 2-th wethers offered on account Mr M. Moynihan made 21/8 for the first 900 and 21/6 for the balance. Other lines of 2-th wethers on account of Fraser Bros made 21/10, and on account Mr F. Herbert 21/9; b.f. rape lambs, 14/6. The cattle yarded comprised mostly of younger steers and they met a strong market. One attractive line of 18-mos P.A. steers offered on account Mr C. Burling made £7 after spirited competition; other 18mos. P.A. steers realised from £5 ss, £5 12s 6d, £5 15s, £6 Is to £6 7s 6d; small lines of 2-yr mixed steers £7 to £7 2s; weaner P.A. steers (medium) £3 2s to £3 12s; 18 mos P.A. heifers (medium), £3 18s, £4, £4 2s to £4 ss; store P.A. cows, £4, £4 ss, to £4 10s; Jersey cow and calf, £6; fat cows, £7 to £7 ss; weaner Jersey Cross heifers, £2 2s 6d to £2 12s 6d. PAHIATUA SALE. Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd., report having held a supplementary cattle fair in conduction with the usual weekly sale at Pahiatua yesterday. Sheep did not come forward up to advertised numbers, only a few pens being yarded and prices were on a par with recent rates. The advertised number of cattle came to hand but in spite of a good attendance of buyers, prices failed to come up to expectations and passings were fairly frequent. Taken right through, the quality of the yarding was not as high as at the main sale, but even cattle showing quality and condition were considerably easier. Quotations are as follows for ewes r.w. S.D. rams, 17s 8d; fat P. A. cows, £7; vealers, £2 15s, £3 Is; 2Jyr. P.A. steers, £7 2s; 18mos. P.A. steers, £5 18s; empty cows, £3 7s, £4; boner cows, 30s, £2 10s; P.A. weaner heifers, £2 2s.
