CARTERTON

DRUIDS’ LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of the Totara Lodge of Druids was held at Carterton on Monday night. Prior to the business opening the lodge, as is customary at the meeting nearest to Anzac Day, stood in silence in memory of brethren who fell in the Great War. Favourable reports on sick members were received, after which £lB 11s 8d sick pay was passed for payment. A benevolent grant of £2 was also passed to a brother in distress. With sundry items the accounts totalled £2l 6s Bd. A member was granted his clearance to the Pahiatua Lodge to take affect as at May 30. One new member was initiated-into the order, and a proposal from another accepted. Complimentary reference was made to the large attendance of members at the Anzac parade on Monday morning, when District President Bro Hector Bassett (Matarawa) placed the lodge wreath on the Cenotaph in memory of brethren who fell during the Great War. General business was discussed in in connection with the lodge’s ball to be held on May 16, and the function promises to eclipse previous gatherings. The combined committees will meet on Friday evening to finalise the arrangements. , CARTERTON' BAND. It was a matter for keen regret that recently owing to lack of players and enthusiasm, the Carterton Municipal Silver Band, which over a period of years had given excellent assistance at various public functions, had become defunct. It was realised that the Band would be very much missed at Monday’s Anzac Day service at Carterton. Mr J. L. Harris, who for some years was prominent in building up the Band to its former efficiency, therefore arranged a scratch band to supply the music and he is to be congratulated on his public-spirited action. About three practices were held, and the singing at the service in the Tivoli Theatre was again lead as in former years by the band —a ■very creditable performance in the circumstances. The band also played “Band.of Ho]se and Glory” at the conclusion of the ceremony. It is to be sincerely hoped the band will be revived at the earliest possible date. TENNIS AND GOLF CLUBS’ BALL. The combined Carterton Tennis and Golf Clubs’ annual ball held in the State Ballroom last evening was a decided success. Visitors were present from Gisborne, Masterton, Lower Valley, besides a good attendance of local residents. The dance hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion with autumn foliage, and the supper tables were similarly adorned with autumn blooms. An excellent supper was provided by a committee of the combined clubs, and the music of the orchestra left nothing to be desired. The secretaries were Miss Noline Stubbs and Mr G. S. George and their efforts gave every satisfaction. They were supported by a committee comprising of Mesdames A. O. Murray, W. J. Wells, C. C. Callendar, L. Keedwell, N. Worsfold, W. Moroney, J. Steel, Misses M. Smart and B. Peters, Messrs E. H. Fisher, J. Steel, L. Keedwell, R. W. Roydhouse, J. E. Dwane, and N. Worsfold. SPIRITED PLAYING. The local Pipe Band, which was only established last year, also assisted in the Anzac Day services, and their spirited playing was much appreciated. PERSONAL. . Mr Matthews and his daughter, of Petone, are visiting relatives at Notting Hill, Waihakeke. Mr Spencer Triggs, of Wellington, was the guest of Mr Clive Moody, Waihakeke, for the weekend.
