MOTOR HITS POLE

BISHOP’S FORTUNATE ESCAPE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). PALMERSTON NORTH, April 25. A fortunate escape from serious injury was experienced by the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, when the car he was driving struck a pole near the Longburn railway crossing this morning. He was on his way from Wellington to Feilding for an Anzac Day service. The morning was wet and the road in the Longburn locality was fairly greasy. The bishop's car developed a skid and left the road diagonally, the rear part crashing into a pole about 100 yards from the railway crossing. The car slewed round and came to rest against a hedge. Bishop Holland, who was travelling alone, had a remarkable escape, the car being badly batered, but the extraordinary feature of the accident was that not a window in the car was broken. The bishop proceeded to Feilding in another car and conducted the service. He was badly shaken and received a few bruises but otherwise the accident had no effect on him. He will spend the night with Archdeacon F. H. Petrie, Feilding, and go to Ohakune tomorrow.
