CHEAP LITERATURE

MAGISTRATE’S CONDEMNATION. The Special Magistrate of the Perth Children’s Court (Mr Alwyn Schroeder) condemned in strong terms certain types of cheap literature which were flooding the country and were available to children and adolescents. “I am absolutely astounded to discover the vast amount of sordid, gruesome and nasty stuff that is available to any girl or boy who has the necessary sixpence or so to buy it,” he said. “The censor appears to be very wide-awake over highbrow books suspected of an immoral tendency, but totally blind to the enormous number of cheap magazines dealing with domestic infelicities, rapes, murders and underworld scourings.”
