PURCHASE OF PLANES
« BRITISH MISSION TO U.S.A. RUGBY, April 21. One of the members of the Air Ministery mission of five experts and technicians who left Southampton for New York to investigate the possibility of the purchase of aircraft for the Royal Air Force in the United States and Canada, stated before leaving that the visit would be as short as possible, probably lasting a few weeks. “The Times” says it is to be concluded from the composition of the party that special attention will be paid to the possibility of securing early delivery of certain bomber types and of shipborne aircraft suitable for the air branch of the Navy. “SHADOW” FACTORIES. PROFIT FIGURES DISCLOSED. LONDON. April 22. Six firms which in 1936 undertook to run “shadow” aircraft factories will receive £3OO profit for each aeroplane produced. The Government is paying the net cost. This is revealed in the report of the Air Force accounts for the year ended March, 1937, published today. The firms will also receive a special bonus if production costs are cut. The cost of building and equipping the “shadow” factories was £1,418,351.
